While everyone feels sad at times, depression is more intense and prolonged. Signs that you may be depressed include feelings of emptiness, hopelessness or intense sadness, low self-worth, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, lack of motivation, and thoughts of death or wanting to die. Therapy can help to identify negative thought and behavior patterns that fuel depressive symptoms. It can also help you learn new ways of thinking and emotion regulation skills which can lead to increased meaning and joy in your life.
While feeling anxious at times is a universal experience, intense feelings of anxiety can negatively impact daily functioning and leave you feeling extremely overwhelmed. Anxiety symptoms include recurrent feelings of intense worry and fear, racing thoughts, difficulty focusing, sleep problems, restlessness, irritability, and panic. Therapy can help you identify sources of anxiety, gain control over your thoughts, and learn new ways of thinking; it can also help you learn strategies to cope with and effectively manage your anxiety.
Experiencing trauma is more common than you may think; in fact, most people have experienced at least one trauma and many people have experienced multiple traumas. Trauma includes physical and sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, intimate partner violence, being raised by a caregiver with a substance abuse problem, racism, and the loss of a loved one through death, divorce, or incarceration. Common symptoms associated with unresolved trauma include distressing thoughts about the trauma, flashbacks, irritability, avoidance, negative beliefs about oneself, shame, difficulty trusting, relationship problems, and difficulty experiencing positive emotions.
Losing a loved one can be one of life’s most painful experiences. Symptoms of grief include intense sadness, feeling numb, disrupted sleep, difficulty concentrating, difficulty completing daily tasks, and feeling like life is no longer worth living. While each person’s grief process is unique, there are also common elements that are universally experienced. Therapy will help you understand the grief process. Therapy also provides a safe place for you to process your thoughts and emotions related to the loss of your loved one at a pace that feels comfortable to you, and learn skills to help you navigate your grief process.
Integrating your faith in your therapy and working with a therapist who shares your faith may be extremely important to you. If that is your desire, we are passionate about providing Christ-centered therapy. In fact, our name “Mosaic Counseling and Consulting” comes from Ephesians 2:10: “For we are God’s masterpiece, created anew in Christ Jesus to do the good things He planned for us long ago.” It is based on our belief that we all experience brokenness in our lives and that God can take broken pieces and make them into something beautiful. Christian counseling can help you to live the abundant life that Jesus died for you to have. We infuse God’s word, biblical principles, and your beliefs into our work together in order to strengthen, equip, and encourage you on your healing journey.

Once you make a decision to see a therapist, it is common for you to feel nervous about your initial appointment. Therapy is the process of meeting with your therapist to address and resolve problematic behaviors, thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and relationship issues. In our day to day lives, there is often pressure to wear a mask; therapy is a confidential, supportive, safe, and non-judgmental space where you can be your authentic self. Your therapist will listen empathically, model a healthy relationship experience, ask thought-provoking questions, and provide feedback. Through therapy, you can change self-destructive behaviors and habits, increase insight and self-awareness, resolve painful feelings, improve your relationships, learn skills to help you more effectively deal with the challenges you are facing, and more. At Mosaic, we see therapy as a very collaborative process where your therapist joins you on your healing journey and supports you in achieving your goals. We welcome your input regarding your preferences and what you think will be most helpful to you.
Most sessions are weekly and 50 minutes in length. Your therapist may suggest meeting more frequently based on your needs and goals. Once you begin to identify root issues and see some change, you and your therapist can reevaluate and determine if meeting less frequently (usually every two weeks) is clinically indicated.
The length of therapy depends on many factors, including your goals, how frequently and consistently you attend sessions, your level of motivation for change, and the nature of the concerns you are addressing in therapy. Generally, situational stress or problems can be addressed in fewer session that longer-standing issues or trauma. Because therapy is a collaborative process, you and your therapist will discuss and evaluate your progress together.
At Mosaic Counseling and Consulting, we tailor our therapeutic services to the individual needs of each client and find that a collaborative approach is most effective.
When working with adults, we often use “talk therapy” but can incorporate other interventions such as mindfulness, coping skills, therapeutic arts, and narrative therapy based on each person’s unique goals.
When children come in for therapy, our philosophy is that caregivers are the experts on their children; therefore, we embrace family involvement and like to work closely with caregivers. We know that the best treatment outcomes are related to caregivers gaining increased understanding of their child’s symptoms as well as learning ways to help their child reach their treatment goals in the home or school setting. In addition, many children do not respond well to traditional “talk therapy”; as a result, we often utilize play, art, and narrative therapy with children. Both caregivers and children are involved in identifying problems and creating treatment goals.
Most of the clients we work with use their insurance benefits to cover a portion of their therapy. We are currently in network with Aetna and Horizon BCBS. We accept all other insurance plans as an out of network provider. We will provide you with an invoice at the end of every month which you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Usually, you pay the full fee upfront and get a percentage of it back, but that varies from plan to plan. We recognize that therapy is an investment so we suggest contacting your insurance provider prior to your first session to obtain an accurate idea about your out of network coverage.
